Read our interview here with indie artist of the piano-pop persuasion, Mary Jennings. Mary’s got another great new single for you to hear called “Metamorphosis,” which also just appeared on iTunes today!

Also listen her previous single below: “Home.” Mary will be playing live next at the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, NC on Thursday December 4th.

LADY INDIE: A piano driven band works better in certain atmospheres/venues. What is your favorite type of venue to play in?

MARY JENNINGS: The venue really doesn’t matter to me as long as I have an engaged audience. The audience is the key in any show. You want to feel like they are not only listening and being respectful but really feeling your music as well. I have often found that smaller listening rooms and house concerts really provide that kind of an atmosphere. I want to feel like the audience and I are in this together and intimate settings are perfect for that.

LADY INDIE: What was the inspiration behind the song “Metamorphosis?”

MARY JENNINGS: Growing up, I was definitely a unique kid. I didn’t dress like everyone else and was sometimes bullied by the “cool” kids. Just as it is for anyone I’m sure, it was hard to become comfortable in my own skin. However, instead conforming to expectations, I got to a point where I embraced my quirks and differences which helped with my confidence to go on and do what I do now. That was my “metamorphosis.”

LADY INDIE: You say your music is your therapy. In what way have writing these songs changed you for the better?

MARY JENNINGS: I think that music has provided an outlet for me. I get asked a lot, “how does such a happy and nice person write such dark and melancholic material?” Now obviously not all of it is dark and melancholic but a lot of it is so I can understand the question. My feeling has always been that I write these songs to deal with anything going on in my life.

Once I have written about it in a song (or in multiple songs) I am able to get past it and not have it affect me every day. In a way, writing for me is airing out grievances, exposing my insecurities and weaknesses, and letting go of anything that I might have held back. It’s not much different than going to a therapy session really.

LADY INDIE: What drew you to the piano?

MARY JENNINGS: I was drawn to piano primarily because there was one out at our house. Every family member that I visited with regularity also had pianos in their homes and everyone was open about letting me play it. For the longest time I thought every one had a piano in their homes. It seemed as common as having a sofa or a dining table.

When I went to someone’s house that didn’t have one, it felt foreign to me. As soon as I was big enough to crawl up on the stool, I was playing piano. I loved that all the keys were right out in front of you and you got to pick any that you wanted to play.

LADY INDIE: Who are some of your favorite pianist singer/songwriters?

MARY JENNINGS: I have so many! Some of my favorites include Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, Imogen Heap, and Chris Martin.

LADY INDIE: Can you tell me what some of your plans are for 2015?

MARY JENNINGS: I will keep releasing singles every two months until I am ready to release my next album which will hopefully happen early summer. I will also be playing/putting on shows, such as my Hear ‘N Wear clothing swap show events, co-writing, and bolo tie making. I am sure I will have a bunch of horror movies to watch throughout next year as well.
